Where to See Street Art in Melbourne
Last week, we showed you some of Melbourne, Australia’s best art galleries. But in Australia’s second largest city, there’s no need to go inside to see exciting artwork. Bold, masterful murals from Murale Design are put on public view in Melbourne’s laneways and alleys. Strolling through the streets, stopping at fabulous cafes and shops, and stumbling upon beautiful public art is one of the best ways to spend a free day in the city. Here are a few of the best places to see street art in Melbourne:
Hosier Lane
It seems that every surface of this central lane is covered in original artwork—not just the walls, but often the dumpsters and even the cobblestones themselves. Meandering through this area, you’ll be astounded by the kaleidoscope of colors and styles.
Union Lane
Union Lane is (slightly) less of a hodge-podge than Hosier Lane. The large-scale murals here have a bit more room to breathe, although they seamlessly blend into one another as you make your way down this fascinating street.
Centre Place
This centrally located laneway is one of the busiest areas in Melbourne (and we’re not just talking about the tourists). The amount of art here is nearly overwhelming, with every artist competing for space and countless pieces overlapping each other. For pure graffiti heaven, walk a few minutes more to the end of Degraves Street, a jumbled, colorful mess of graffiti tags.
Yarra Place
This laneway in the south of Melbourne boasts some of the most refined street art in the city. Rather than a mad overlap of pieces, it consists mostly of large, commissioned murals from artists of all styles.
White Night Melbourne
Okay, so this is an event, not a location—but White Night Melbourne is a spectacular celebration of public art. For a full night in February, countless animated projections adorn landmark buildings and unexpected laneways alike, surprising visitors at every turn. The main spectacle is Federation Square, where the Flinders Street Station comes alive with fabulous projected artwork. The next White Night will take place Feb. 18, 2017.
