Eating and Drinking Your Way Through Melbourne
Food, food, food! That’s what it’s all about. I’ve just returned from my most recent trip to Australia, and I had a great time exploring Melbourne’s famous culinary scene! Below are my recommendations for your stay in Melbourne.
Melbourne’s graffiti-covered laneways make for great photo ops!
Within the CBD
Restaurants: There are a few favorites, such as Supernormal and Chin Chin. My personal favorite here is Supernormal. Chef Andrew McConnell has quite the following—and for a good reason! From the fresh selections to the delicate flavors of the gyoza, you will leave more than satisfied.
TIP: They do not take reservations unless your party is six or more, but our wait was only 35 minutes, and you can have a seat with a beverage while you drool over the food passing by.

Great cocktails: I recommend 1806. You may walk right past it on the street, so keep a look out for the wooden door. Also, it is fairly small, so do be prepared to be turned away and make a second go at it.
Doughnuts: I recommend Shortstop. I tried several of the doughnuts, but the Earl Grey & Rose was my favorite. Grab a coffee while you’re there, as well!
Casual dining: Want to dine in one of Melbourne’s famous laneways? My favorites are the Postal Lane right by the H&M and Degraves Street. It’s a fantastic experience (even in the cold) with lots of people watching and great food!

Hop on the tram and take it about six stops from the CBD, where you will find Marion. This quaint restaurant is also a wine shop, and it delivers on both fronts. You know your meal will be amazing when the complimentary bread and creme fraiche at the beginning knock your socks off!
TIP: While many Melbourne restaurants abide by the no-reservation trend, you can indeed make a reservation here. In fact, it’s a near necessity.

Departing from the Flinders St Station, Tram 78 will make 15 stops over a short 15 minutes and lead you almost directly to Mr. Miyagi. With a vibrant and fresh vibe, you will no doubt have fun at this restaurant. Worth a try: Tempura Broccoli, Salmon Nori Taco, Shiitake Dumplings, and of course, the Miyagi Fried Chicken. Note a wait time on the chicken of about 45 minutes.
TIP: You may want to make a reservation here, but if you decide to make a spur-of-the-moment visit, don’t be scared by the wait time. We were told 1 hour 15 minutes but only waited 20 minutes before being shown to our table.
