This week I’d like to share with you the wonders of Tasmania, Australia—a dream vacation destination! Still a wild place, more than a fifth of the island is gorgeous wilderness and is a World Heritage site, protected by the national park service.

Tasmania, often called Tassie, was settled by convicts, miners, and whalers who’ve all left traces of their history at scenic sites around the island. Here you’ll find the most amazing local wines and delicious fine foods.

Best Things to Do in Tasmania

1. Wildlife & Wilderness

Tasmania’s unique wilderness will have you in awe as you hike the many trails, ranging from short, easy walks with boardwalks to multi-day walking adventures up some of the tallest mountains on the island.

Keep your eyes open, as you’ll have many opportunities to spot unique wildlife! You can see Tasmanian Devils, wallabies, wombats, pademelons, eastern quolls, loads of endemic birds, dolphins, little penguins, whales, and platypus—just to name a few.

2. Fantastic Food & Drink

If you’re a foodie, you’re in the perfect place! Tasmania is all about fresh, organic produce and sustainable farming. The dishes found here are out of this world and will tantalize your tastebuds.

Don’t forget the amazing wine tasting tours Tassie has to offer. Boy are they serious about their wine and beer! Tasmania’s cool climate and mild summers create the perfect regions for cool-climate wine making. Since the 1840s, Tasmania has been winning awards for their wines, and they’re best known for fantastic sparkling whites.

Tasmania also has a long history of brewing and distilling, producing amazing beers, fruity ciders, and fine spirits. It’s no wonder they’re home to one of the biggest beer festivals: the Tasmanian International BeerFest!

3. Cradle Mountain

While you’re in Tasmania, make sure to check out Cradle Mountain, an iconic Tasmanian landmark. Located at Lake St. Clair National Park, you’ll find a wonderland of ancient rainforests and alpine heaths, glacial lakes and icy streams, and rugged mountains. Keep an eye out for ancient plants such as the endemic King Billy pine and native deciduous beech. You’re bound to see loads of wildlife here, as well!
