Exploring New Zealand’s North Island: Taupō, Hawke’s Bay, Coromandel Peninsula, and the Bay of Islands

I enjoyed exploring the stunning North Island on my recent trip to New Zealand. From competing in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship to discovering hidden gems across the island, every moment reminded me why New Zealand is one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.

Competing in Taupō: A Personal Highlight

My journey began in Taupō, where I competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. Competing in this event was a personal milestone, and Taupo proved the perfect host. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, with Lake Taupō’s crystal-clear waters to have the opportunity to race, there was a dream. Taupō isn’t just for athletes—it’s a playground for adventure lovers and a sanctuary for those seeking relaxation. Whether hiking to Huka Falls, soaking in natural hot springs, or exploring the vibrant lakeside town, Taupō offers something for everyone.

Hawke’s Bay: A Culinary and Wine Paradise

Next, I traveled to Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand’s premier wine region. Known for its award-winning Syrahs and Chardonnays, the area is a dream for wine enthusiasts. I visited several boutique vineyards, pairing exquisite wines with farm-to-table dining experiences highlighting the region’s fresh, seasonal ingredients. Napier, the Art Deco capital of the world, was a delightful stop. Its 1930s architecture and coastal charm make it the perfect place for a walking tour or a leisurely afternoon by the sea.

Coromandel Peninsula: A Beachside Haven

From there, I traveled to the Coromandel Peninsula, where golden beaches meet lush rainforests. A highlight of my visit was Cathedral Cove, a secluded paradise accessible only by foot, kayak, or boat. The turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations were unforgettable. Hot Water Beach added a playful twist to my journey. Digging my hot pool in the sand was a unique experience that captured the charm and creativity of New Zealand travel. The Coromandel also offers incredible hiking trails for outdoor lovers. With its sweeping coastline views, the Pinnacles Track is not to be missed.

Bay of Islands: Diving at the Poor Knights and Luxurious Glamping

To round off my adventure, I headed to the far north, exploring the Bay of Islands and beyond. One of the highlights of this leg of the trip was diving at the Poor Knights Islands, a world-renowned marine reserve. The underwater scenery was terrific, with vibrant coral gardens, unique rock formations, and abundant marine life. Jacques Cousteau once named the Poor Knights one of the world’s top diving locations, and it’s easy to see why. For my accommodation, I stayed at Makoha PurePod, an off-grid, eco-luxury glass cabin nestled in the lush surroundings of Kerikeri. Waking up to panoramic views of the Kauri Forest and native bush, with nothing but birdsong and the river running below, was a truly magical experience. The PurePod concept is about blending seamlessly with nature, offering an unmatched sense of peace and connection to the land. Kerikeri is a charming town known for its artisan shops, boutique wineries, and fresh produce. I couldn’t resist sampling the famous Kerikeri oranges and exploring the historic Stone Store, New Zealand’s oldest building.
